Thorim

BetaThorim is in beta testing. All ratings, records and achievements will be wiped for a fresh start when WoW: Forever officially launches.

The rules

How it works

How every ranking on Thorim is worked out, and what we do to keep it fair. No secret formulas.

Where the data comes from

  • The Thorim addon watches what happens in your game: your duels, your battlegrounds, the players you kill and the numbers in your Statistics panel.
  • The Thorim uploader sends that to the site after you log out or type /reload. You can also drop the file on the upload page.
  • You can only send results for your own characters. Signing in with Battle.net ties your characters to you.
  • Results older than 30 days, or dated in the future, are ignored.

Why: An addon file lives on your PC, so anyone could edit theirs. That's why most rankings below only count things that two different players recorded.

Duel rating

Win to climb, lose to drop. Beating stronger players is worth more.

How your rating moves

  • Everyone starts at 1,500.
  • Beat someone rated the same as you: about +16. They lose the same amount.
  • Beat someone 200 points above you: about +24. Beat someone 200 below: only +8.
  • Your first 20 duels move your rating twice as fast (32 vs 16), so new players find their level quickly.
  • There is one ladder for every level from 10 up. Your rating comes with you as you level, and only duels between players within a few levels of each other count, so nobody climbs by beating lower levels.

Why: Counting only wins would reward farming weak players. This way, who you beat matters more than how often.

When a duel counts

  • Both players must have the addon, and both recordings must match.
  • The two players must be 3 levels apart or less. A level 60 beating a level 50 changes nothing.
  • The duel goes on the ladder of the higher-level player, so high levels can't farm a lower ladder.
  • The fight must last at least 5 seconds, or 15 seconds if someone runs away.
  • Two of your own characters can never rate against each other.

Why: Duels that don't count still show in your history. They just don't change your rating.

Rematches

  • At most 3 rated duels a day against the same player.
  • Over 30 days, your first 3 duels against someone count fully. After that each rematch counts a little less.
  • If two players duel 10+ times in 30 days and one wins more than 80%, their duels stop counting until we take a look.

Why: This stops two friends from trading wins to boost each other.

Being on the ladder

  • You appear on the ladder after 10 rated duels.
  • If you don't duel for 14 days, you drop off the ladder. Duel once and you're back, rating untouched.
  • There are no seasons. Your rating is all-time.

Why: Nobody can sit at #1 after three lucky wins, or hold it forever without playing.

Thorim score

  • Your Thorim score is the average of the ratings you are ranked on: the duel ladder, the battleground board and the world PvP board.
  • You need to be ranked on at least one of them. When two players have the same score, the one ranked on more boards comes first.
  • The three ratings stay separate. The score only sums them up in one number.

Battlegrounds

  • At the end of a match the addon saves the whole scoreboard: kills, deaths, damage, healing, flag captures and the winner.
  • Everyone in the match who uses Thorim sends the same scoreboard. A match seen by 2 or more players is confirmed, and where uploads disagree, the most common number wins.
  • Once a board has 20 confirmed matches, only confirmed matches count on it.
  • Win rate needs at least 20 games.
  • Battleground rating: everyone starts at 1500. Each match is a game between the two teams; winners go up and losers go down, more when the weaker team wins. The first 20 games move faster. You show on the board after 10 games.

Why: One player's upload can be edited. The same scoreboard from several players can't be faked by one of them.

World PvP

  • Only fair kills count: the victim must be no more than 3 levels below you. Ganking lowbies earns nothing.
  • The same victim counts at most 3 times a day.
  • Kills in battlegrounds don't count here; they have their own boards.
  • Kills count straight away; when the victim's addon recorded the same death, that backs the kill up.
  • Boards show the last 30 days and all time.
  • World PvP rating: every fair kill is a game between you and the other player: the killer goes up, the victim goes down, more when the result was a surprise. Everyone starts at 1500; you show on the board after 10 fights.

World records

Biggest hit, most honorable kills, most quests and every other number in your Statistics panel.

  • Your numbers come from your own addon, straight from the game's Statistics panel.
  • Totals only go up. A number lower than one you sent before is ignored.
  • When other players' addons see your character, they quietly check your numbers. Nothing changes for you; it only helps us spot fakes.
  • Numbers that are impossible for your level (for example a level 20 hitting for 10,000) are held back until we check them.
  • Characters who haven't installed Thorim only show numbers that 2 or more other players saw.

Honor

  • Your honor rank (1-14) shows on your page and in your tooltip.
  • Everyone can reach rank 14 in Forever, so instead of ranking ranks, we show who got there fastest and who has the most lifetime honorable kills.

Achievements and titles

  • Thorim has its own PvP achievements: duels, class mastery, class rivalries, battlegrounds, world PvP, honor and the Thorim score. See them all on the achievements page.
  • Each one is Common, Rare, Epic or Legendary, worth 10, 25, 50 or 100 points. Most give a title, and the title's colour shows how rare it is. Legendary ones are held by a handful of players, some by only one at a time.
  • Achievements are checked every few minutes from everything you have uploaded, so a new one can take a short while to appear. Your profile shows how close you are to each one.
  • The first player ever to earn an achievement is remembered on it.
  • Achievements and titles are never taken away. You pick which title to show on your account page; by default it is your rarest one.

Fair play

What we do when something looks wrong.

  • We flag: edited files, numbers that grow impossibly fast, players claiming characters that aren't theirs, and pairs who keep trading wins.
  • Flagged results are held back, never silently deleted. A real result that was flagged by mistake comes back once checked.
  • If someone else already claimed your character, the claim is disputed and reviewed. Once Blizzard opens character data for Forever, every claim is checked against your Battle.net account.

Privacy

  • We only use what the game shows to other players anyway: names, classes, levels, gear, statistics, duel and battleground results.
  • You can hide any of your characters, or all of them, on your account page. Hidden characters disappear from every board and page.
  • We never sell or share data.
